Where are they now?

With the season underway, or about to be depending on the league, I'd say it's that time again to see where some of our former players have re-surfaced. So what do you know?

I'm sure we all saw our old friend Justin Papineau on the Lowell roster, and were shocked to see Brendan Buckley with Manchester.

All everything Holy Cross Goalie Tony Quesada is waiting for some ice time in Houston behind a pair of veteran net minders.

Speaking of Crusdsaders, two more members of last year's sqaud- Marc Bianchi and Ben Conway- will have their CHL careers start this weekend with Lubbock and Memphis respectively.

Former 'Cats and Rivermen Trevor Baker and Tyler Rennette are reunited in the UHL and have the expansion Bloomington team off to a 1-1 start.

On a downer, IceCats tough guy Jeremy Yablonski and HC Gopher Slayer Tyler McGregor  have been released from from their ECHL squads.

Those are just a few. Who else do you know of?

Marc Brown is with Villach in Austria for his 2nd year, www.marcbrown.ca .  He has another year on his contract with Villach.  There are game videos of him on the web site.

Greg Day is in Graz in the Austria.

Does Mark get to use the sticks he likes in Austria? What about his skates, does he get the skates he needs? Or is there another reason why he isn't good enough for the NHL now?

Yeap, he gets everything he is supposed to get and being the Icecats all time leading goal scorer, you'd think you would give more respect Tom. He has never bad mouthed Worcester. Watch the goals and see the quality of his goals and the assists in the series final where he beat Arturs Irbe 4 times and was game star twice. He was better than Patrick Thoresen in the final series and he now plays for Edmonton Oilers this season. Marc is good enough for the NHL but it takes more than skill to be there, the timing and opportunity must be right. His chance may still come, but life in Austria is great. The people are great, the food is great, free car, free appartment, good pay, play half the games of the NHL, and some very good incentives to stay. I like the big ice surface, the game is better. The NHL game just sucks with the big players and the dinky little rinks. I get bored watching it so much that I change the channel after 5 minutes of it. Download some of his videos on the site and see how great the fans are in support of thier team. They travel to away games with drums and really get into it. I forgot to mention, Marc plays against Reinhard Divis who replaced Irbe this year in Salzburg so that is where Reinhard is.

If one were to list the elite leagues in Europe from top to bottom according to talent where would the Austrian League place on that list?

Thanks for the update on Marc, Rory. Can you post some of the Elite web links here? I'm sure we'll see a lot of familiar names playing across the pond.

The ranking of the Elite leagues is interesting. The rankings are mainly around politics and money rather than play quality. As Marc has told me, the top two lines in any of the Euro leagues can play anywhere. Marc has played in Germany which really sucked because only a few of the teams in the league pay on time and act professionally. The play quality is not much better than Austria, if better at all. He was offered last year a contract with Modo in the Swedish Elite League but turned it down; he practice with them and viewed a few games. He knows some players there who play in it. He played 2 games in the Swiss Elite League last year and probably that is the most prestigeous because they pay the most but not necessarily the best quality of the players. Some players come from the Swiss, Swedish, German, etc to the Austrian League and think they are going to dominate and they don't. The Austrian Elite League, known as the Erste Bank League (1st Bank League)has been coming up big in statue rapidly. The owner of Salzburg is the co-owner of Red Bull Energy Drink company and he is worth billions. They own two F1 race teams which is the most expensive sport in the world bar none. He is pushing this league forward. This year a Slovenian team has joined the league. To my knowledge no other Euro league has allowed a team from another country in thier league. The TV coverage,if you watched the Premier TV coverage of the championship final clips on Marc's website, is first class. Premier TV is thier top TV station to my knowledge in Austria. The ratings and fan attendance has hugely increased through last year. One of the TV play by play guys is really interesting to listen to, even in German, it makes you laugh at his method of delivery. Austria has let it's hockey go down for years but for the last 3 years or so, they have a plan. First is to build up thier hockey program and get back to the Olympics which they started to do. Last spring they won the second class in the world championships to move up to the elite Nations again. In fact Austria's National Team beat Germany just before the Olympics last year. Austria's goal is to make it to the next Oylmpics in 2010 in my city of Vancouver. If Marc stays in Austria for 3 years, he could become an Austrian National and be part of thier Olympic team which is what the Austrian Olympic Team General Manager has told him and who is also the General Manager of his Villach team.

On Marc's web site, there is a link to the Villach (VSV) team web site under his picture at the top. I would suggest you put the web site link into a translation web site like Google has and works pretty good. This site has all the links you would want if you explore it carefully.

I just created a translated link to the VSV web site on Marc's www.marcbrown.ca website.
