First impressions?

To 210- thanks for posting all the game articles.

To everyone- how about some thoughts on it now. What are everyone's first impressions of the team? Who do you have high expectations for? What do you think of the curtain? Did you resume any old rituals on opening night? See people you hadn't seen since the 'Cats left? How about it?!

Well, my first thoughts are that I can't keep posting about the Sharks on and IceCats message board! I think the team will be uneven for awhile. A mix of young and old that haven't played together for too long. Looks a like a 3-man goalie rotation too. Its a little different for the coach this year. Before, he was strictly development. Now he has veterans, and needs to devleopment the young guys while the expectation is to win. In the ice, the first thing that sticks out is we need a LOT of work on line changes. I like their hustle and effort. I like how they dig into the corners hard. When they are setting up a play, they are alomst always looking for someone to cross the net to screen or tip in. Haven't seen too many direct shots on goal from the point. Spang is an offensive D-man - needs to work on his D. Darche is a great player for us. Hopefully he wont get called up. I liked the curtain much better than I thought I would. I was expecting the glossy vinyl tarp kind of curtain. But its more of a flat black cloth. Blended in very well. The DCU Center staff seemed very happy to have hockey back. I did however think the music sucked. Not loud enough and selections were not good. I know they wont play Gary Glitter when we score a goal, which i think sucks too, but they need something else. Its only home game #1, so things will evolve.

As I said to Speed, PD, and a few others...I don't know if this team is going to win a lot of games, but if they consistantly give the effort that I saw in both games vs Portland they will be a fun bunch to watch.

And I don't mean to speak for Pierce, but changes are coming for here. ;)

I'm with Speed on this one.  The sound system wasn't loud enough.  But I do believe there was a fan request in the Q&A about lowering the volume there.  I also think the song selection is poor overall, even the goal song's worse than "R&R Pt. 2" (and I'm sick of Gary Glitter).  What would you suggest?

I'll miss R&R pt 2 simply because we had our own little tradition with that one in section 108, but it can be replaced. The music was a bit off, overall. I liked the hitting on the ice.I'd have to say they did a good job with the curtain becuase it really didn't stand out too bad considering how much of the seating they blocked off.

Off the ice, a strange thought came to mind- a few of us closed down Moynaughs after the game. The last time I was in there, some of the same people closed it down. It was after the last IceCats game. How's that for coming full circle?!

As far as the team is concerned, my wife and I were both very impressed with the effort put forth. Hustle does not seem to be a problem. Defensive zone play and especially the transition game both need some work but we're confident and hopeful.

Otherwise we were both happy to be back and to see old faces from the 'Cats days but EXTREMELY disappointed that the Sharks seem to have abandoned the whole idea of a season-ticket-holders lounge like the good-old  "Cat Club"!

The Cat Club was a money loser for the DCU...people would go in there and buy the meal and then not leave when they were done, limiting the amount of food that could be sold because there was little to no turnover of customers.

I don't think most folks would even care if they didn't serve the pre-game meal (though the food was usually good!) It was, for my wife and I as well as others we've talked to, just a nice place for mostly adults to go and get away from all the "kiddie" stuff especially between periods, get a little peace and quiet, talk without having to shout and maybe have a quiet drink. And it was a nice perk for season ticket-holders.

I've heard that they may do something like the "CC" next season. I hope they do!

Although it is much to early to judge how this team will do, I do agree that Darche looked good and seemed to always in the middle of the action..... In general, I like the curtin idea. However, (in the "end zones") they may want to consider putting some Shark signs (or ads) on it so as to add a little more life to it's appearance..... Finally,  I hope that, in time, the camera operator's skills  will improve. Seeing "instant replays"  will add extra enjoyment to the game. Go Sharks !!

I enjoyed everything at the game except one thing.  I did not like the in between stopage of plays adds when the crew came out and threw shirts into the stands during the period.  That needs to go, other then that its gonna bea  fun season.

I also hate the stoppage ads Sharks, but I don't want to see them stopped.

That's a revenue stream the IceCats could never take advantage of because they couldn't sell that time. The Sharks have been able to, and I'm all for anything within reason the Sharks can do to be profitable.

I'm presuming WTAG also airs ads during that time, so that would be a positive for them also.

Friends of mine said this topic came up last year in a Springfield STH Meeting. It was explained to them that the stopage in play was something the AHL agreed to adopt when they admitted the IHL teams to the league. It was a big source of their (IHL) revenue and has to continue.
