Just a thought...

Ok I am not 100% sure about this but I was thinking that if Worcester does not get an AHL team for next season the city has to pay back the DCU $2.5 million (???) for not having a team in there. Now I thought I read somewhere last season that the average cost of an AHL franchise is around $1.5 million (???). If those figures are correct would'nt the city be better off just buying a franchise regardless of wether or not we got 3,000 pledges? I mean they could use the $2.5 million they were gonna pay DCU back with to buy the franchise and still have $1 million dollars left over. Even if they lost $200,000 dollars a season it would still take them five years to actually "be in the whole" plus it would still be bringing more revenue to the city.

Like I said before I am not 100% sure about this information and maybe Speed or 210 could shed a little more light on it.

I think ECHL is around 1.5M or less, but noit sure. But any AHL teams are over 2M. THe IceCats went for around 2.2M - and that was considered somewhat of a bargain. Based on what I've read and looked into over the past year, I'd say a franchise will cost anywhere between 2.4 and 2.8M. Utah wanted 3M last year, and rumor has it was talked down to 2.75M.

There are several dormant ECHL teams that could be purchased for significantly less than $1.5 million, and some teams struggling in their current markets that could also be bought for less -- but remember, DCU could have had the Rivermen for $150,000 -this- season, and passed. The other thing to consider with the ECHL is that there is already one instance of a City trying to run an ECHL team, and failing -- the ECHL Greensboro Generals were managed by the City for their final season.

I am not an expert on this, but I don't think that the agreement with Digital Federal Credit Union to put their name on the Centrum requires that an American Hockey League team play in the building. As far as the ECHL Rivermen franchise reportedly being available for $150,000 earlier this year? I read that in the newspaper also, but it seems like a very low price for a pro hockey franchise. You can't even buy a house for $150,000 anymore.

No, the contract with DCU does not specify an AHL tenant. It does not specify hockey either (as I have been told by city and building officials). It's based on the number of nights the building is in use. That number, I would imagine, is very difficult to attain without a primary tenant such as a hockey team, which brings in 40 or so nights of use depending on the league.

Without having anything to base it on, other than rumor and/or speculation, the $150k Rivermen franchise deal may have had some "ancillary costs" (ie debt) associated with it. It was really irrelevant, though, because there were other ECHL investors (and UHL) wanting to get in the door here, but were told by the city that they were waiting on the AHL.  The difference now is that, it seems like, the city can no longer wait (assuming we don't get AHL) due to DCU Naming rights. Seems like it's a "fill the dates or give back the money" situation. ...just my guess.

My final $0.02 here is that if the city had $1.5 to buy a hockey team they wouldn't need the money from DCU for all the upgrades.
