ECHL eyes Worcester

Yesterday's Metrowest Daily had an article about Wideman in it.

http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sportsNews/view.bg?articleid=90628

But what I found interesting was this part about the ECHL coming to Worcester. It would seem they really want to, but a snag has occured. (Good! I think we would be better off with NOTHING for a year, than to get an ECHL team right away.) It said this...

"In other ECHL news, the league announced Friday that the Vermont franchise was one of three clubs given an extension of its voluntary suspension of operations as it awaits the completion of an arena project. That means Vermont won't enter the league for the 2005-06 season, which could put a crimp in possible plans to bring an ECHL club to Worcester. The league, which reportedly has several ownership groups potentially interested in filling the void left by the IceCats' move to Peoria, could still set up shop in the DCU Center next year. But part of the appeal of the market would have been to create a natural rivalry with Vermont as the ECHL attempts to move into New England for the first time. "

There is no chance an ECHL team can work here under the current ECHL business model.

Anyone read Billl's article today?  Last paragraph says ECHL will make a pitch to the city soon.

Anyone thinking about putting an ECHL team should just take the money they were going to invest and throw half of it away...that way they'll still have half.

Most ECHL teams are making money...most AHL teams are not. The ECHL business model works in North Carolina where hockey is thought of about as much as we think of curling...Since hockey is so popular in Mass, the model will most likely work. Glens Falls went from AHL to UHL and there numbers are not down much...explain that! Either people like hockey, or they don't. The ECHL is a great league from what I have seen. The Vermont franchise will help them as well.

As much as I would like to see someone- anyone- make a pitch to the city next week, my mindset is that I'll believe it  when I see it. The only ones to my knowledge who have said anything directly about coming here are Portland and the UHL president. Other than that, there hasn't been much, if any, substance or names behind the ECHL, or Utah. All we hear is "a group" or "a source."

Last I heard the Vermont franchise is dead. The next closest team would be Atlantic City, and they are moving to California.

When Worcester fans can drive an hour (or less in some cases) to see AHL hockey the ECHL doesn't stand a chance here.

210-I think only the die-hards like yourself and Speed (sorry to anyone else I did not mention) would travel that distance for and AHL game.  Most fans would not, face it, ECHL hockey may be the ONLY game in town and for some (families for one) would rather drive 15-20 minutes instead.  I could see driving an hour for an NHL game (maybe and WHENEVER that may be) but for an AHL game...not sure I would do that.  Having said that, I applaud your desire to see AHL hockey and fight for it in your city and I still hold out hope for your city to keep the AHL there.

I'm not too sure I would say only Speed and 210 would travel to other AHL cities to see games in the future. I have talked to *many* people who would rather drive 30-60 minutes to see AHL hockey than to drive to Worcester to see an ECHL game. Not saying they wouldn't attend any ECHL games but I know quite a few people, including myself who like to go on "road trips" and don't mind driving to see other AHL teams. I know that I am in the middle where I am, 25 minutes from Lowell, 1 hour from Manchester, 20 minutes from Worcester, an hour from Providence, 1 hour and 10 minutes from Hartford, an hour from Springfield - I would drive to any of those places to see AHL hockey if it wasn't in Worcester. I have seen a few ECHL games and I never thought there was a real difference in the hockey - well, I was wrong, there sure is... MUCH more talent at the AHL level, a lot more fun to watch! Just my thoughts.......

AHL hockey DESTROYS ECHL hockey, I agree.  Seen both for a looooonnngggg time.  Back when it was the IHL in Peoria.

BTW-there are some fans in Peoria who actually WANT to keep the ECHL!!  Just kids though who never saw AAA level.

The vast majority of people that I have spoken with hold the same opinion as I do--that the ECHL will fail here because there there is better hockey available to them close by. When you add to that the fact there are no ECHL teams within a reasonable driving distance (which means visiting fans won't be coming here) there is no chance an ECHL team can be successful. One thing I think is funny is some think that just by making it an affiliate of the Bruins will make it work.

No chance.

It might draw a few more people than one that isn't, but it won't be enough.

How does everyone know that the echl isnt going to be successful "IF" they come here....? A lot of people are just assuming and saying the negative...

Well, I haven't seen any real positives in place for an ECHL team here...do you know of any positives that an ECHL team can look forward to icecat23?

The Vermont ECHL arena is going to begin construction within a few months. Where do you guys get your facts? The ECHL needs a local business group to step up and that is where I think the problem will begin. It may be a lot harder than they think. I like the ECHL as players stick around a bit longer and the players are more willing to take risks. It is not the speed of the AHL, but some of the teams in the ECHL could beat some of the AHL teams.

The UHL will fall on it's face in Worcester. Can we all agree to that.

well first off..."some" of the people on this forum dont seem like they would even give the echl a chance..i mean some of you say there is a big difference in hockey between the two leagues but personally i think the ice cats are playing like a echl league's team....

OUCH!!

Guess I know what to expect next year here in Peoria, a glorified ECHL team, eh?

hey i didnt mean to be too harsh, but i am just stating what is being done right now. They need to step up their hockey skills just a tad...., and they need to know what to expect when going into someone elses arena and when someone comes into their arena. You cannot let another hockey team walk all over you, and it just seems like that is being done.

I love the ice cats and all and i support them , dont get me wrong ...i am not trying to be negative to the cats...so dont think that

You just let us all know when they start building that arena in Burlington...

There's an arena in Burlington being built?

From: sticksave

Since you don't live their, you missed the press conference they had there with all the local media announcing construction of a 9000 seat venue. The main tenants are what is secretive at this point. Vermonters know it is coming soon.
