Jamie Pollock question

From: Chavez   Chavez is a registered live IceCat
Date: 12-Apr-04
May i ask a question about him, what do all you people see in Jamie? Is it just the personal side of him that you like? I have meet him before, and he is a very nice guy no doubt about it. But when it comes to hockey i just do not see what everyone else see's in him. He has a hard shot,GREAT, he cant score with it,he ALWAYS shoots it into the defencemen standing RIGHT in front of him, or ask several of his teammates that have recieved injuries from his shot that is never on net. If he was such a great player his plus-minues rating would be good, which it is not. He gets caught FAR too often trying to create scoring chances that dont work out and never gets back on D-in time. someone tell me what im missing, because of the 30 or so people that i talk to at the games want to see him out of town please!

Hi Chavez, before I post anything, I just want to say that I respect your opinion. :)  I think that what people see in Jame is a combination of his hockey skills and his character.  Everyone that I know that has met Jame agrees that he is a very genuine, nice guy.  As far as his hockey skills, this is what I see...

2000-01 - Set Franchise Record for two quickest goals scored by same player - :-09 apart on 3/18 vs. Lowell.
2001-02 - Finished third in IceCats scoring (66) and second in power play goals (13)
2003 - Reassigned by St. Louis to Canada's National Team for the Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland on 12/22. Registered one goal (GWG) & two assists in five games in Spengler Cup. Named to Spengler Cup Tournament All-Star Team.

Granted I don't get to watch his games because I'm in St. Louis, but I listen to as many games as I can, and I watched all his games he played in St. Louis this year.  He is a very good player.  He is capable of playing both forward and defense.  I think that he fit right in with the the Blues when he was here.  Former Coach Q stated in an article that was in the St. Louis Post Dispatch,

"Jame Pollock added a nice presence on the power play and did a nice job...he was comfortable and he played with confidence."

And the fact that he was called up twice this year makes me think that the Blues might be considering him more in the future (that is just my opinion and not fact).

"He has a hard shot,GREAT, he cant score with it"...He doesn't have to score with his shot.  He creates offense which is what is important.  "he ALWAYS shoots it into the defencemen standing RIGHT in front of him, or ask several of his teammates that have recieved injuries from his shot that is never on net."  Coach Q said in another interview, "With his shot, he's just got to pound it and apologize afterward."  His slapshot is his weapon.  It creates great scoring opportunities and keeps the puck down at the other end of the ice.  Not only does he have a deadly shot, he is a great weapon on the power play.  5 of his 8 goals this season were power play goals.  He also had a game winning goal this season.

This is my opinion.  And again, I respect your views on this  :)

9Polly fan, I agree with everything you said,he can create scoring chances with his shot, especially on the PP, which the Cats are better on the PP with him in the lineup, i think the only reason he may not be in ST louis is his decision making and His defensive game. I hope he does make the NHL he has put his time in down here, but being in the minors for 4 years also tells you that he may not be an NHL talent. Some guys have come and gone to the NHL from Worcester and he is still here.

Chavez you make a good point.  In my opinion Jame just needs more experience (Q also said that in an interview).  But then again we also have to keep in mind that there are many NHL players who didn't get to stay on their first call up, but have had long, successful NHL careers.  I hope that Jame makes it to the NHL, preferrably wearing the Blue Note.  :)

When he tees it up, things happen. Players move out or freeze and he usually keeps it very low.Sometimes he can deek around as they freeze and shoot or  pass it off. He is off to Switz anyway, right?

If Tom's (from Switzerland) post was correct, then it looks that way.  But I think it's only a one year contract, so who knows what will happen after that.  :)

I think 9Pollyfan summed it up. I know for me it is a combination of play and personality. If Jame could be just a tad more accurate on his shots (to many go wide) he would be that much more dangerous and in my opinion already playing in the NHL.

I would love to see his comparison for everytime he hit the net/hit an opponent, missed the net, or hit a teammate.. Yes he does have a hard shot, but KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!

If you knew Jame you'd know that and that's why he's not playing up front.

Not sure what you're saying here. Are you saying you're in high school and that it isn't worth replying to you as a result?

i'm just saying as a HS student I know I am stubborn (ill openly admit it), and I always look to adults as being people who know when to let things rest, because i never can, and i hope as a grow that is one thing i will learn.

Chavez;

One of the reasons Jame is still around in this organization is because they see potential in him.  Other players come and go because they have bad attitudes and are possibly a cancer orond the locker room.  Jame is well liked and has improved every year in one way or another. He aslo has a geat attitude every time he goes to the rink.  Others, well, they just go to get paid.

His +/- this year was better than Brimanis a -6 or -7/Laflamme also -6 or -7....etc. So his defensive play is up to standards if not better.  He played in 42 games this year and had 32 points, can you imagine if he played in them all, I think he would have led the whole league in defensive scoring.

Also, if you watch closely, which obviously you don't, Jame knows when to use his slapshot, wrist shot or when to pass it.  He is very very good at getting the puck to the net, if it's not hard, it's because he had to shoot it an inch or so the lef or right of a stick or shin pad.  He really does make some unbelievably atheletic plays in the offensive zone and D-zone for that matter.  When it's a big slap shot, it's usually a goal or a goal off of the rebound.  Watch the other D-Men and see how good he really is   ;)

#NINER if only i could say.......

From: Chavez   Chavez is a registered live IceCat
Date: 15-Apr-04
#NINER, sorry, i disagree with you, Pollock has no clue when to use the proper shot, and his plus minus is a +1 or even i think, but he has 32 points or so so that means if he is only even that he has been out there for all of those goals against, or he would be a +32 or so, so he is average at best, the reason Brimanis and Laflamme are lower is because they do not try and create as much offense and Pollock, Which im not trying to say is a bad thing for pollock, i just dont understand why people love this guy so much,(unless you are female, which most of his fans are). Lets see how he does in the playoffs, i hope he proves me wrong 100%.. Oh and when i was saying that other players come and go and Jamie is still here, i meant the NHL, i dont think ST LOuis would bring guys up that are a cancer in the locker room do you? Backman,Jackman,Walker,Salvador ect..

Chavez. Your latest ramblings show that you know little about the game yet, despite your age, you are still entitled to your opinion. FYI.1. The defensive combination of Byrne and Pollock has been one of the BEST in the league over the past two months, particularly their GA.2. Ask Speed and 210 just how much Jame has improved over the past few years. These two fans KNOW the players and the GAME.3. Ask the coach his opinion of Jame's play.4.Pollock is one of those players who is always on the ice when we need a goal.5.Pollock is one of the BEST defencemen at pinching and keeping the puck in the offensive zone, controlling the opponent's stick in front of the net, and putting his passes tape to tape. Ask ANY one of the Ice Cats.6. The Blues loved his play in the 9 games he was up, but he's not a #1 pick, doesn't make the big bucks so they don't have an investment in him.( Too bad because the Blues need PP help right now. )7.He'll be elsewhere next year anyway.8. Take your Grade 7 English more seriously.

Chavez, again, you think you are a genious.  Pollock should not be in this league.  He is an NHL player, and like 'Windy' said, they don't owe him anything no matter how well he plays.  All these other "bonus babies" have to be given a chance because they have signed for mega dollars.  I happened to be at the game in Manchester tonight...and what happened 24 seconds in?  Pollock made the right decision of taking a low hard slap shot, and......that's right, and easy tip in for Evans.  Once again, phenominal at shot choice.  I believe his playoff stats are excellent too.  Check 'em out, none are better for the amount of games played.  He competes his hardest when it is all on the line...ex//The Playoffs.   By the way, when you are on the ice for a power play goal, it does not count as a plus, I think Pollock had 15 or so PP points.  Please, "Chavez", open your eyes!

Not quite sure what my age has anything to do with this topic at all? I have been going to Cats games for all 10 years so you can trust me i know my hockey, you people can think what you will about Jamie and i will think what i think. Of coarse he's on the Ice when they need a goal, did you read my whole post? I said he has his values and he is an alright offensive defencemen, i just wish he wouldnt make such poor decisions sometimes. And i know for a fact that Jamie WAS benched at the beggining of the season for poor play, i remember after one of his horrible games against Lowell ,Granato said Jamie needed to watch for a few games. We will leave this at that because obvousiy we all have different views and there is no point bickering on any longer, hopefully jamie will play his tail off in the playoffs and prove me wrong like i said.

Chavez,

I don't agree wth you about Jame but..........you go......EVERY ONE is entitled to their opinion :)

From: #NINER
Date: 16-Apr-04
Chavez, if you want to see defenseman make poor decisions, watch Virtue, Brimanis and LaFlamme.  Comparatively, Pollock should be the go to guy when a goal is needed and when a goal needs to be protected.  Granato is set in his ways and at this time of year their is no changing that.  Last night in Manchester, Pollock made another right decision in shot selection.....a low hard slap shot, which created an Evans goal and which eventually led to an Icecats 1-0 lead in the series.  They need to rely more Pollock, or give him more responsibility.  "An alright offensive Defenseman"......Chavez, he played 42 games this year but was still in the top 20 leading defensive scorers, if this is just "alright", What is good?  He would be an asset to any team in this league and the NHL for that matter.  JamePollockFan is right though, you are entitled to your opinions.

From: #NINER
Date: 18-Apr-04
Chavez...Hopefully your opinion is changing, Pollock has been the MVP in this series so far.  On both ends of the pond too.  What an incredible play he made in the third period to keep the score 2-2.  Slid at the perfect time to prevent the pass from getting through on a 2 on 1.  Lets Go Cats!

I really enjoyed reading this thread. I watched Jaime play in the WHL. He was often noted for his hard work ethic, his great attitude, and hard shot since he started in the WHL. He improved every year, and helped the Seattle Thunderbirds get close to winning the Western Conference finals in 97. It sounds like he has rightfully gained many new fans.
